Celebrating the Fourth Of July in DC

Washington DC is the place to be if you’re looking to celebrate the Fourth of July with a bang. There’s a variety of activities for everyone in and around the nation’s capital this Independence Day. Whether you choose to stay home at Sonnet, leave the city for some hiking or hit the town to watch fireworks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during this festive holiday.

Fourth of July Parade

The annual National Independence Day Parade kicks off at 11:45 a.m. with participants marching up Constitution Avenue between 7th and 17th streets. Performers include bands from across the country, drum corps, and floats. Make sure to show up early to get a good viewing spot, and bring lots of water.

Catch a Nationals Game

If parades aren’t your thing, but you’re still looking to start the day early, head down to Nationals Park to watch the Washington Nationals play the Miami Marlins at 11:05 a.m. Catching this early holiday game gives you plenty of time to partake in other activities throughout the day, and the park is just a 15-minute drive away from Sonnet apartments.

National Parks and Trails

Spending part or all of the day taking in nature is another great option to celebrate the holiday. Rock Creek Park, just 2 miles away from Sonnet, is an urban oasis complete with waterfront hiking trails and tennis and golf courses close by. Anacostia Park is another great local park offering trails, a roller skating rink, picnic sites, and sports areas.

If you want to escape the city some more, Great Falls Park is about a 35-minute drive from Sonnet and offers breathtaking views of the Potomac River. Enjoy spectacular falls & rushing white water, along with picnic areas, trails & boating.

Of course, the classic way to end your Fourth of July celebrations is with fireworks. Why not break away from the crowd and take an Independence Day fireworks cruise on the Potomac River? Departing from The Wharf, about a 15-minute ride from Sonnet, this 2 hour cruise boasts views of the annual holiday fireworks display. Come aboard and enjoy an extraordinary evening on the water.

If you’d rather stay in the city, The Rooftop at The Embassy Row Hotel is hosting a rooftop pool celebration party from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. Dance to the sunset as DJs provide amazing tunes leading up to the grand finale of “A Capitol Fourth”s Fireworks Display. The Embassy’s Rooftop Cantina will provide signature American bites and beverages. Ticket purchase includes a signature cocktail (21+), Chef’s American grill appetizer and entree, plus a chance to win free prizes.

If you’d prefer something free and quiet, then check out Meridian Hill Park, just a 5-minute walk away from Sonnet Apartments. In this 12-acre park, you can lay out a blanket, lie on the grass and watch the fireworks in peace while staying close to home.

Enjoy From Home

Of course, if you’d rather spend the day celebrating at home, that’s an option as well. Throw your own get together at Sonnet’s rooftop, our residents get to experience a poolside bar and a dining space with gas grills in the same area as our luxury pool. Hanging out and keeping it simple at night by watching the fireworks from the rooftop, or from the floor-to-ceiling windows in your home at Sonnet, is another great option.

No matter how or where you choose to celebrate this Fourth of July, we hope you enjoy the day. Happy Fourth!
